In the autumn of 2017, Rochdale Borough Council carried out consultation on the need for extra Secondary school places from September 2018.
Rochdale Borough Council needs to make sure there are enough secondary school places for those who need them, taking account of the demographic growth and change and demand for places. Previous analysis of data and consultation has shown that there are three key factors driving the need for more school places in the Heywood Township:
- There has been a steady increase in Year 7 cohorts in line with birth rates in the area since 2012.
- Movement of families into the borough and township has increased cohort sizes in all Primary year groups which has had a follow on impact on cohort sizes as they enter Year 7.
- New housing developments.
Siddal Moor Sports College has been identified as having the capacity and scope to accommodate an increase in the number of school places to ensure that there are enough Secondary school places available for families within a reasonable distance of this popular school.
The proposal is therefore to enlarge Siddal Moor Secondary school by providing an additional 60 places in each new year group. The school’s Published Admission Number (PAN) was increased from 210 to 240 in September 2018, and it will increase again to 270 with effect from September 2019. Over time, this will lead to the capacity of the school being increased to 1350 pupils.
In order to accommodate this anticipated growth in numbers, building works need to be carried out to provide additional classroom and support facilities at the school. Whilst some of this work involves changes to existing internal structures, new external construction is required to provide an additional seven classrooms. It is proposed that this will be achieved by providing new accommodation over two storeys to the North West corner of the existing school land, which is currently used as external hard play surface.
The 3D views provide an indication of where the new classrooms will be located, which as you can see, will wrap around the existing drama studio behind the current dining area. The extent of the new block will not encroach any further towards our shared boundary than any other buildings on site, and the building silhouette, as viewed from the North West side of the school will not be radically altered.
A planning application is due to be submitted to Rochdale Borough Council in early March 2019. Application drawings and supporting documents will be available to view on Rochdale Borough Council’s website shortly after submission. If the planning application is approved the current plans are that works will commence as soon as school breaks up for Summer, on the 19th of July 2019. It is anticipated that works will be completed by September 2020, ready for the start of the new academic year.
In addition to the above, once the application has been submitted to Rochdale Borough Council, copies will be made available for inspection at the school, and parents, carers and members of the public will be most welcome to call in and inspect them.
